I’ve just added a new page to the left side menu - What I Dugg. Hopefully you will find it interesting to see what stories I have “dugg” on digg.com. If you haven’t discovered Digg yet, see how it works. I hope you will find it interesting to see what news stories I have been reading.

All the articles come from a neat little feed provided by Digg. It involves simpy adding a line of javascript to fetch the data, and adding three css classes to style the list. If you would like to have a similar thing on your website, take a look at the digg tool. Its quite customisable.

Just finished upgrading my blog to the latest version of Wordpress, which was released two days ago. Some notable features include spell checking for posts, updated spam catcher and much more efficient database code. Hopefully you should notice the whole site loads a lot quicker now due to these database optimisations, it seems to from my end anyway. Aaron Brazell has written “10 Things You Should Know About WordPress 2.1″ with even more details on the changes that come with WordPress 2.1.

I’ve also updated the feed URL due to some fixes and also I think it looks better. My new feed URL is http://henrycleaver.co.uk/feed/

After much fiddling I’ve just updated the permalinks for my blog. They are now in the form /blog/year/month/post-name which I thought makes it look better and maybe easier to find posts for all visitors, whether human or search engine. I hope the search engines manage to update quickly, Google is usually pretty quick at finding new stuff because of the sitemap.

Been trying a bit today to update the permalinks for my blog. Instead of each post being linked to by something like index.php/?p=200 I want it to look like /blog/year/month/day so it is a bit friendlier. I’ve just recompiled apache to enable mod_rewrite but haven’t managed to work out how to put the rewrite rules into the .htaccess file yet, never having used it before. I’ll have to leave it till sometime after Christmas when I’ve got more time to read through the Wordpress manuals.

I’ve just been playing and have managed to implement the photo gallery into the rest of the website. It should work with all browsers, but if you browse to the gallery without maximising your browser window, it could look strange due to a restriction in the coppermine software. Due to the way the template for the gallery works, it will take a lot more work to put the random photos in the top left into the page - might get round to it at some point.

If you have any problems or it looks weird in any way, let me know!

I’ve just made a few updates to the right sidebar.

  1. Google search. I think this is quite cool. You can search this website or the whole of the web, and the results will appear as a page on this website.
  2. RSS. If you are into your RSS, then you can stay up to date with my blog posts by subscribing to this feed. You should see an orange box in the address bar (Firefox), or to the right of the home button in IE7. If you use Thunderbird for your email, you can have posts appear as emails. For more info on RSS and its uses, see this article.

Welcome to my new website!

I have been working on this design on and off for a few months now in my spare time. Recently, the release of Internet Explorer 7 spurred me into action to get it finished, as my old site didn’t work very well at all in it; it would have required a complete redesign to fix anyway. So here you are, a design that works well in IE6, IE7 and Firefox. It should look the same no matter what browser you use, which is pleasing.

You will probably have noticed the blog menu down the right hand side of the page. This contains a monthly archive listing of all my posts - it goes back about two years at the moment, I’ll open up the rest soon (all the stuff from my old LiveJournal if you remember it, which was added as private for some reason). There is also a category list so you can browse by category if you wish.

I hope to integrate the photo gallery with the rest of the site at some point, but until then it remains a stand along section. Might take a considerable amount of time, which is something I don’t have a lot of at the moment. I also plan to add an RSS feed at some point once I have learnt a bit more about styling them.

Let me know what you think of it, all comments appreciated!

Just been playing trying to get rid of that annoying blue band that appears for you internet explorer 6 users (get firefox). Turns out I accidentaly deleted the float: left line in the css file. Proper browsers rendered it as intended, but as always IE6 had problems.

You may notice on the menu bar to the left that I have added an image randomiser. There’s only a few in there at the moment, but I hope to add more soon. Let me know what you think of it, and especially let me know if you spot any brokenness (that means you Internet Explorer users!). I thought about a feature where you could click to enlarge the image, but decided it was pointless as you can just look in the photo gallery!

Just put some rather funny photos into the gallery. The two new albums are Miscellaneous, with a few old photos that i have scanned in, and the other is photos from my phone. Also uploaded four videos from my phone. Enjoy!

Edit: Finally got round to putting a few pics up from Jo’s birthday.
